What does Your Homeschool say about Your Home.

Homeschooling is the best option for parental supervision in the education of one’s child. The parents decide what the learning outcomes for their child will be. However, in a Christian homeschool setting, the outside world will learn what undergirds our home’s spiritual foundation. The outcomes of homeschooling in the Christian home should reflect the importance of God as the central focus of our worldview. Our children will not discover and learn about God if God is not central to the homeschool curriculum.

After homeschooling our youngest daughter, I learned some critical “home” school concepts. First, I knew that my home did not have the Biblical foundation to learn her role in the body of Christ. Second, although I made sure to use a homeschooling curriculum created by people of faith, the focus was not God’s Word. Although I chose publishers who had a good reputation in the Christian homeschooling community, Biblical concepts was not primary. I committed to reading the Bible to her slowly from when she was two years old until she was 12 years old. I read her every book of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. This did not provide any opportunity to learn about God or what God expected of us.

We enrolled our daughter in the highly recommended Biblical courses to cultivate a Biblical worldview. She attended Worldview Academy. She received the Timothy Award while in AWANA, which reflects her ability to memorize Scripture. Scripture memorization was a central part of our home school curriculum. By the time our daughter reached her teenage years, no one would have ever known she had any relationship with God or His Word. I began to think about what went wrong. We provided her with everything she needed to know the Bible’s teachings.

Children learn a lot from role modeling and they are very keen on assessing the actions of adults. Children also have a great sense of knowing the difference between what we say and what we do. They may not confront us when they see an error in what we say about God and how we respond personally, but they are paying attention. God has given us an extraordinary gift to help us learn to know and love Him and His Word. My daughter’s teenage life taught me that our home school setting was more about school than cultivating and role-modeling who God was to us. Our marriage relationship could have been better and we should have been more aware of the dangers on Internet apps.

My husband and I should have modeled that we loved God, and abiding and trusting Him was the vital lesson we wanted her to learn. I loved teaching our daughter because she was intelligent and quick to learn concepts. Our daughter graduated when she was 16 years old and she was able to test out of some of her classes needed at the community college level. Yet, her spirit was empty. Our home school experience taught us about the condition of our home. I learned that cultivating a child’s heart to love God must come from someone who loves God through practice and not just lip service.

Another critical piece I learned from this experience is that our daughter did not understand the Scriptures. I did not include Bible curriculum where our daughter was taught the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. And we did not teach her the wisdom of godly living. The Proverbs teach us the godly wisdom. Parents need to know God and His Word for themselves. We can not expect our children to do what we don’t do. The revelation of these things inspired me to write three of my books. “The Bible Survey of the Old and New Testament,” “A Proverb Each Day,” and “A Proverb Each Day for Youth are great homeschool resources.

I wrote each of these books with homeschooling families in mind and the home school setting is the perfect setting to develop God’s time for the parent, the student, and the family. There must be a family time in God’s Word. Having a family time of study helps families together in their relationship with Christ and each other. You can find these resource tools in our online bookstore or at www.Amazon.com. I pray that your homeschool setting will be one where your child will grow in the knowledge and love of Christ. Be blessed.
