January 31, 2025 – Proverbs 31 – The king’s mother counsels him about his choices and how he carries himself as a leader. Proverbs 31 does not give us details as to how he responded to his mother or what manner of life King Lemuel chose to live, but having the Proverb begin with this scene shows the importance of a mother’s role in her child’s life even as they grow into adulthood. We don’t know if the king heeded his mother’s advice, but we see the importance of giving our children wise counsel. The Proverb then changes course and gives us insight into what the author has subtitled in the NASB, “The Excellent Wife.” Interestingly, this book closes with a preview of this woman’s life.

The book of Proverbs warns about the strange woman, the adulterous woman, the foolish woman, and the contentious woman. To end with, the excellent woman is a great encouragement. These wonderful words of wisdom are a picture of a woman’s life to encourage us and stir us up to do our best for our families because our families are God’s gifts. These Scriptures encourage us to do our best to care well for our families. We should conduct ourselves wisely. You may not sell garments to the merchants, but you work hard to ensure your family has everything. You may not sew your children’s clothes, but ensure they all look presentable and cared for. Whatever we do, it is all for the glory of God.

You may not have maids, but you make your home a place of love and joy for your children and husband. God has provided us with words of wisdom for each day. The Proverbs help us to grow spiritually and to become more like Christ. He has generously offered His wisdom, and I hope and encourage you all to cherish God’s wisdom. The excellent wife gets her strength and guidance from God and not the opinions of others. We need God’s wisdom every single day of our lives on this earth. Tomorrow is a new month. We can all begin again, gleaning new and fresh insights each day from the wisdom God has given us to walk this life journey. Thank you all for staying the course. Be blessed, and stay wise.

January 30, 2025 – Proverbs 30 – Proverbs 30 starts with the words of a man named Agur. This Proverb should erase any doubt about the accuracy of God’s word. Agur knows there is a holy God, and the interesting thing is that he also knows He has a Son. This book was written way before Christ came to this earth. You can trust God’s Word because it has been tested and proven true. We know why these Proverbs are essential as a foundation upon which we build our lives.

“Every word of God is tested”… We can see for ourselves the evidence of these truth as we see life through those around us. Have you seen what happens to a child who has gotten their way all their lives? They bring shame to their mother. Do you know how destructive jealousy can be? Have you ever seen a drunk person when they had a hangover? We can see the proof of God’s word in those situations. God has given us His Word as a gift we should treasure and follow. Remember, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;” Be blessed!

January 29, 2025 -Proverbs 29: These Proverbs taught us how to build a path of life that leads to righteousness. As followers of Christ, we must work out our salvation daily, continuing to be transformed by the Holy Spirit into the likeness of Christ. I pray for all of us. This chapter continues with warnings and instructions to keep us from the devil’s torment. We can glean from the Proverb from yesterday and create a great understanding of how to build a path of life that leads to righteousness. As I look back on our Proverbs daily, I am amazed at how much wisdom God has given us. We could never contain all of it in one month of reading a Proverb daily. Even in the many years I have been reading a Proverb each day, I have not been able to retain it. God has provided us with this great gift, so we would treasure it bit by bit.

Take in God’s wisdom slowly, settle it deeply, and grow deep roots. As you take in little by little, you will see God’s Word becoming our words. If you did not get to read a Proverb for a day, don’t let the enemy guilt you to the point that you don’t read it at all. Remember, God desires you to keep walking on the path that leads to life. He wants to know that He is important enough in your life that you never leave or forsake Him. Don’t read a Proverb daily to keep up; read it because God loves you enough to pass His wisdom to you daily. Please don’t make this a habit; make it the core of your life because it helps you to be more like our Father, Savior, and Holy Spirit. Be blessed!

January 28, 2025 – Proverbs 28 – Proverbs 28 gives us the framework and visual to discern good and evil. Suppose there was a chart with two columns, column A and column B: the righteous and the wicked. Column A gives you all the characteristics of the righteous, and Column B gives you all the attributes of the evil. We have no excuse for lacking wisdom when God has given us wisdom freely through the Scripture. We don’t stop at creating a chart and looking at all the evil and excellent characteristics of the righteous; we must apply the good things in our lives and personally forsake these wicked things that may appear in our character.

Be encouraged to change as God reveals these truths to you. A Proverb each day compels us to build a godly path for our lives. We must keep God’s word as the mantle of our lives and keep our eyes focused on Him. The Proverbs is our personal discipleship training guide. We can learn to be more like Christ by applying each word of wisdom to our lives. I am so thankful that God loves us enough not to give us expectations without equipping us with how to meet those expectations. Have you been changed these 28 days in reading a Proverb each day? Have you been able to become more wise and more like Christ? I hope God’s generous provision of wisdom through the Proverbs will bless your day. I am so looking forward to February and beyond. Be blessed!

January 27, 2025 – Proverbs 27 -“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” James teaches us not just to say that I am going to do this or that tomorrow or go here or there without acknowledging God’s mercy to allow us to do so. My mom and dad taught us to say if the LORD spares us. I learned later on in life to say if the LORD wills or LORD willing. We don’t know if we will be alive within the next 5 minutes, so living in such a way is very haughty. On Christmas Eve, a friend of mine of 19 years passed away. I had talked to her the Saturday before she passed away, and then she was gone. We never know what the next moment of our lives will bring, but we do know that whatever that may be, God is in control and knows what He is doing.

We also see in verse two the weight of our boasting. We can think of all types of lofty things about ourselves, but it is not our praise that reflects the quality of our character; the praise and reflection of those around us reflect the quality of our actions. If our actions are genuinely praiseworthy, people will acknowledge it, and God will move on the hearts of those who are sincere to give you those times of honor. But we don’t give honor to ourselves; that is prideful. Proverbs 27 provides wisdom for us by warning us to have discernment and showing us examples of people and situations to avoid so that we can avoid strife and sorrows. They are also God’s generous gift of wisdom that He has provided to help us become wiser as we walk through this life. Be blessed!

January 26, 2025 – Proverbs 26 -Proverbs 26 was a neatly sectioned chapter that covered the ways of a fool, the ways of a sluggard, and the impact of our words. We must identify foolish behavior, quickly deal with it, and purge it out of our lives. I was perplexed about verse 4, “Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will also be like him. Answer a fool as his folly deserves, that he not be wise in his own eyes. These Scriptures teach us to care how we relate to people who think they know everything. First, when a fool is venting his arrogance, we don’t vent arrogance with that type of person. We respond by giving wise counsel suitable for their actions that result in thoughtful consideration before acting. It’s the act of returning kindness when someone behaves rudely. We wait patiently for the right time to respond in wisdom.

January 25, 2025 -Proverbs 25 – “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.” It brings God glory to forgive, restore, and reconcile us to Him. It is a glorious thing to Him to cast our sins as far as the East is from the West. It reminds me again of David. David believed in God; that is what faith is all about. When we accept the Scripture, it becomes evident in how we respond to God. We must have a heart that convicts us of sin and causes us remorse and sorrow, but we must also know that God wants to relieve us of that burden. Receive that truth and hold it dear; it is for freedom that Christ has set us free. We can have joy in the grace God gives us.

Sin is like the dross that hides the beauty of silver, but God, through His grace, skims it right off of us. We get to shine like silver does and be a vessel that brings Him glory, not because of us but because God sees Christ in us. Take time to think about these Scriptures and how it is a glory to God to forgive us and restore us. Be blessed!

January 24, 2025 – Proverbs 24 – Proverbs 24 begins a new segment in the teachings of wisdom. This Proverb gives warnings and precepts on being wise and avoiding evil men. It opens with this verse, “Do not be envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them; For their minds devise violence, and their lips talk of trouble.” In the years after I gave my life to Christ and began to attend “evangelical” churches, I found that there is more shunning and casting out than evangelizing. I am in awe of how people love to be around evil people and participate in their evil schemes within the house of the Lord. When we see evil, we are supposed to resist and flee from it, not welcome and spread it. Sin is evil, and in Proverbs 4:14-16, we are taught how to react to evil; it says, “Do not enter the path of the wicked
and do not proceed in the way of evil men. Avoid it, do not pass by it; Turn away from it and pass on. For they cannot sleep unless they do evil; And they are robbed of sleep unless they make someone stumble”. God warns us through the Proverbs of Solomon to avoid evil people. In the Body of Christ, we should also confront those who profess to be Christians but act like the devil. Our character is characterized by the fruit of the Spirit, whose first attribute is love. The Spirit-filled life is the life that God calls us to throughout the New Testament. Paul even poses this question to us in 2 Corinthians 6:14, “Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?”

No matter what a person says, when they practice doing evil, that person is not a follower of Christ and should be looked upon as an unbeliever. Proverbs 24 goes on to encourage us again in how we should build our house. Like the women we saw in Proverbs 14, we should build our house with wisdom. Not just the homes we live in but our spiritual body, which is home to our being and where the Holy Spirit dwells within us. When we yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit, He will help us construct a beautiful vessel that can be used to edify the body. He will help us overcome evil with good.

January 23, 2025 – Proverbs 23 – In today’s Proverbs we are given a glimpse of how we should conduct ourselves around the rich. We should always be mindful of how we behave no matter who we are in the company of. When we are invited to dine with the rich we should not become gluttonous just because there may be a limitless supply of food and drink before us. We should show self control and wise conduct. When we know what our weaknesses are we should not put ourselves in situations where the enemy can tempt us and cause us to sin. Genesis 4:7, teaches us that sin is knocking at our door and it’s desire is to overtake us but we must conquer it. When we do well and allow Holy Spirit to direct us, we will have the self control needed to overcome temptation and the sin that can come by it.

January 21, 2025 – Proverbs 21 -Proverbs 21 continues to provide wisdom about God’s provision to the king. No matter how powerful one may think they are, God’s power has control of their power. If we came to understand that whatever power we have, God gives it and can be taken away by God, it would change how we use that power differently. We must also understand that our way should not be the focus; we should always seek God and discover His way. He will lead us when we do. When we consider what is right through the lens of God’s word, we will also make wise choices. Even when we think we are right, God judges our hearts and will decide righteousness from what He sees as righteous. As this Proverb teaches, God desires us to conduct our lives in justice and righteousness. We are reminded of that in Philippians 4:8, where Paul writes, “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, water is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise dwell on those things. These pillars of our mind create right and wise thinking in us.

January 22, 2025 – Proverbs 22 -Proverbs 22 teaches us that a good name should be desired more than riches. We know that money does not necessarily give a person a good name; in many cases, it corrupts one’s name. As followers of Christ, we must represent His good name, and we must represent Him well. When I think about my name, I think about why my mom named me Mary Margaret. My parents were devoted to their Catholic rituals, especially when naming their children. I have seven brothers and five sisters, and they are all named after either a patriarch in the Bible or a Catholic saint. My maiden name is Mary Margaret Francis. Go ahead and say it, “sister Mary Margaret”. And that is precisely what my mom wanted me to be: a nun. My mom had great hopes for us to take up roles as nuns and priests, so she named us good Catholic names. However, she forgot to tell us what our names meant, and we did not understand that our mother named us because they were good names for us to live up to. Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary and Martha. Names are usually unique to parents, and the person we are named after has some good or unique qualities that we want to pass down to our children. We must train our children to keep a good name. When someone hears your name, how do they react? What thoughts come to mind? Does it bring thoughts of godliness or thoughts of trouble and fear? Be blessed!

January 20, 2025 – Proverbs 20: A Proverb about life and how we should conduct ourselves. Scripture tells us that we are born in sin. However, God has also made man in His likeness. When God created man, He created Him in perfection. But the devil knew that if he could activate our sinful nature, that exact nature that destroyed him, we would continue to have a war raging inside of us. That war is the battle between sin and obedience. This war would forever impact life on earth and how we conduct ourselves.

At an early age, war is activated within us, and it is by our conduct that we show whether our bent is toward God or evil. That is why God wisely instructs us to train, discipline, and correct our children. Proverbs 20 provides instructions to help us identify conduct from our nature to sin and conduct from the likeness of Himself that God has built within us. We must choose to imitate Christ in our conduct.

January 19, 2025 – Proverbs 19 – Proverbs 19 provides principles and instructions on how to conduct ourselves wisely. And how we should live wisely. We get a glimpse of the conduct and behaviors of the wicked and foolish. In the beginning verses, there is much to say about the poor, silly, cruel, and wealthy. This chapter teaches us that being a fool is worse than being poor. Just because a person is poor does not always mean that they are foolish. Some people learn to be content with humble means as they make good use of what they have and conduct themselves wisely with the little they may have. The desire for wealth can lead to foolish decisions, unnecessarily spending money, making wealth an idol, oppressing others, and engaging in many more wicked behaviors.

January 18, 2025 – Proverbs 18 provides us with a contrast between the upright and the wicked. The principles we learn in this chapter teach us about the foolish ways of those who are evil. The wicked will isolate themselves, and any attempt to share wisdom with hard-hearted people only leads to quarreling. I have experienced this often when I attempt to share the gospel’s message with those choosing to reject God and His Word. The foolish do not want to understand; they want to live in their rebellion. They speak in contempt of God, and to silence those who cause conviction to rise in their heart, they become scornful, mean, and angry. They resort to name-calling, cursing, and yelling because the truth does hurt those who are disobeying God.

January 17, 2025 – Proverbs 17 – Proverbs 17 begins with various principles contrasting the differences between upright and wicked conduct. The first principle we learn is to be content with what we have. Sometimes, the wealthy may feast, but their lives are filled with trouble. But those who may have little will be at peace with the little they have. It is the wealthy who have so many things to concern themselves with. We should also be wise in how we work. Employers want to have good managers overseeing their profit returns. They don’t want to work hard in building their business so that it can be destroyed by those who make foolish decisions. Just as fire refines gold and silver, God will test our hearts and refine us through the fire of His discipline. Proverbs 17 provides wisdom for the upright in various seasons of life and in dealing with different types of people.

January 16, 2025 – Proverbs 16 – The first few verses in Proverbs 16 teach us about making wise plans. Psalm 139:2-3 teaches us that God knows our thoughts from afar and the words we will speak before we even tell them. God’s majesty is too high for our human minds to comprehend. But from what the Scriptures teach us, we know that God knows the plans that are in our thoughts. He has already seen our days to the end of our lives. Knowing God’s sovereign rule over my life encourages me to pray according to His will. He also allows us to proceed in our human wisdom, but doing so is foolishness. Since God knows my thoughts and has fashioned all the days of my life, I need His help to lead me to attain the life He has fashioned for me. He has made everything for its purpose. When I establish my plans according to the Lord’s will, He will direct me to the right place because He and only He knows the purpose for which He has created me. Be blessed!

January 15, 2025 – Proverbs 15 – Proverbs 15 – In today’s Proverbs, we are instructed about how we who are righteous should use our words, mouths, and tongues in contrast to the wicked. God provides various Scriptures within His Word that teach us in this area. Proverbs 15:1, James 1:19, and Ephesians 4:29 are a few Scriptures that come to mind. When we desire to please God, we will be careful about what we say and how we say things. These beginning verses are great words of wisdom for developing the character of godly speech so that we can speak the truth in any circumstance in godly love.

January 14, 2025 – Proverbs 14 – In today’s Proverbs, Solomon contrasts two types of women: wise and foolish. Ladies, we have no excuse for not knowing how to conduct ourselves because God teaches us how to conduct ourselves in His Word. A wise woman builds her home. Proverbs 31:10 instructs us on exactly how a wise woman builds her home. She cares for her home, her family, and those in her circles of influence. She’s not a busybody or lewd like the women in Proverbs 5-7. Proverbs 14 also teaches us that those who walk uprightly do so out of fear of the LORD. Proverbs encourages me to believe that if I genuinely fear the discipline of the LORD and do not want to experience His judgment, I must live my life in a way that pleases Him. God is holy and expects us to obey and develop a character like His. Suppose we profess to have His Spirit dwelling within us; when we conduct our lives ungodly, we misrepresent God’s power. Wise and righteous living brings God’s protection, but foolish and aimless living results in consequences and leads to trouble.

January 13,2025 – Proverbs 13 – A contrast between the upright and the wicked continues. The instructions to the wise begin with a parent’s ability to discipline their child effectively. When discipline is applied correctly, even though it may be painful to the receiver, it will be accepted for the intended good result. Discipline is training and corrects terrible behavior. Child abuse results from anger, revenge, and punishment. Parents who take their child’s (ren’s) childish behavior become angry, believing their child’s lousy conduct is against them. Children behave foolishly because they are children. Their poor conduct is our opportunity as parents to show them how to behave correctly. We are our child(ren) first-line teachers, trainers, and counselors. However, discipline misapplied provokes a child to anger, causing that child to scoff at other authority figures or times of correction. Within wise training is learning how to be mannerable. Those trained in proper conduct will not only conduct themselves wisely, but they will also speak wisely. That person knows when and what to talk about at the right time instead of speaking without thinking. As I journal through the Proverbs, I take only a few verses at a time so that by the end of six months, I will have covered all the Scriptures in each chapter. I pray that you will be encouraged as God speaks to you as you journal through the Proverbs. Please share how God has spoken to you through the Proverbs.

January 12, 2025 – Proverbs 12 – Proverbs 12 teaches us about the nature or personality of a person who is upright and wicked. Upright people are those who embrace correction and live a disciplined life. They have real smarts and intelligence. But those who do not like correction are stupid. They who are wise seek to do what is right because it is correct, no matter where they are or who is watching them. They have a loving nature and not a stubborn or arrogant one. Because of their upright nature, God is delighted to bless and show them a favor. They are great intercessors and prayer warriors because God answers their prayers in His favor. That’s how I strive to live; if we profess to be Christians, that is how we should live.

January 11, 2025 – Proverbs 11 – Now that we have principles about choosing godly wisdom, Proverbs 11 provides a picture of what type of conduct we will observe from those who embrace godly wisdom and those who don’t. We learn that people who do not value godly wisdom lack character. They are unethical, they will cheat you, and they lack integrity. They are also money-hungry and are always chasing riches. One of the things that Proverbs teaches us about striving to be rich is that it brings trouble. Those who are wealthy tend to forget God. Proverbs 30:1-5. Wisdom causes us to have empathy com, passion, and integrity. We learn that having a good reputation by conducting ourselves with godly behavior is better than being crooks and conmen or con women.

January 10, 2025 -Proverbs 10 Proverbs chapter 10 begins the first of ten chapters contrasting the righteous and the wicked. The first nine Proverbs establish principles of wisdom that we should apply to live a virtuous and upright life. Now, we have instructions to help us discern the character of those who desire to do good and those who seek to do evil. Proverbs 4 warned us not to be near the pathed of the wicked. Proverbs 4:14-15 “Do not enter the path of the wicked and do not proceed in the way of evil men. Avoid it, do not pass by it; Turn away from it and pass on.” To keep on the path of godliness, we must be cautious about how we live and who we associate with. In chapter nine, Solomon compares two types of people: those who are wise and those who are foolish. Embracing the person of wisdom will cause us to be wise in discerning the path of life. When we are wise, we are cautious, discerning, and observant. We evaluate what others say and do not believe anything or everything we people say. We who are wise evaluate our decisions based on God’s Word. The simple, foolish, and naive people live aimlessly, making unwise choices and decisions. January 5, 2025 – In Proverbs chapter 5, Solomon teaches parents how to prepare their sons to avoid the lure of an adulteress. The high priority placed on discerning this type of woman is very interesting. After a parent teaches their son about how to have a reverent and respectful relationship with God, the very next ŵords of wisdom are to avoid lude and sexually immoral women. We see that the father instructs not only one son but in verse seven, the instruction is for all of his sons. A lack of discernment in this area will cause significant consequences to the man who foolishly goes about his life without paying attention to the type of woman he allows in his life. The following few chapters of the Proverbs will continue to provide wisdom on avoiding this type of woman. This Proverb is good instruction to women to be careful how they conduct themselves. As women, we can gain great insight into what kind of character we should have when we consider the description of adulterous women.

January 3, 2025 – Proverbs Chapter Three continues the progression in teaching us the wisdom of fearing God and gaining an understanding of how to live according to His commandments. Once we have decided that we are going to enter into a relationship with Christ and be transformed by His Word in applying it to our lives, we must then trust that the rest is in God’s hand and His sovereign rule; He will help us navigated the path of life which fashioned for us before the foundations of the world. If we truly have faith in God, then we trust that He is who He says He is and that He is going to do what He says He is going to do. Hebrews 11:6 teaches us that without faith, it is impossible to please God. Faith is not just blindly following someone. Faith is hearing what God has said about Himself and us, believing what God has said about us, living according to God’s instructions, and trusting that God will be faithful. Faithful in what He sees we need, not what we think we should receive from God.

January 1, 2025 – It was great to begin Journaling through the Proverbs. Proverbs 1 opens with an intro to the purpose of the Proverbs. God, our creator, knows everything about us. Psalms 139 reminds us of God’s intimate knowledge of us. He has created all of our days, and He knows what we need to help us walk through each of them with Him. The Proverbs also tell us what it takes to relate to God properly. We understand that the fear of the Lord produces actual knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. Fearing God shows that we know Him in a way that brings about fear. We learn why we must fear God through the Proverbs. We also learn how fearing the Lord helps us make wise choices, and we look forward to hearing how God reveals wisdom to you in Proverbs chapter one.
