One of my favorite shows to watch during the week is The Five on Fox News. I love the way those with different points of view work together, share life, and discuss topics of the day together, with great respect and regard for each other. Judge Janine and Jessica can get a little spicy with each other, but it makes the show so interesting and fun to watch. I love the professional manner in which they carry themselves, while at the same time making me laugh out loud, with their comical antics. Recently Dana Perino announced that she just published a new book, “I Wish Someone Told Me”. Today while I was driving home from my Bible Study, there was another advertisement about the book on the radio. It was then that I thought, “Someone did tell us everything we need to know about this life and godliness, God did.” Sometimes we can hear these catchy titles and phrases and get carried away without giving much thought to what we are embracing. I was taken by this title today, especially after today’s Bible Study topic.
Currently, in our Community Bible Study, we are studying the book of Colossians.
This week our Scripture verse was taken from Colossians 1:8, “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.” 1 Corinthians 1:20-21 says, “Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.” James 3:17 says, “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. And God invites us to ask Him for wisdom and He will provide it.” James 1:5, “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
For those who walk by faith, God has provided us with every answer we need in how to conduct ourselves, how to treat each other, and how to create prosperity for ourselves and future generations. Galatians 6:1-5 encourages us to “coach” or walk alongside each other, similarly to what Dana shares in her book, however, the result should not be for our good, but for the good of those around us. “Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. For each one will bear his load.” God’s wisdom leads us to our spiritual good, which will proceed us into eternal life. And that is where our hearts should be. Our interest should not just be about the successes, or prosperity we have only in this life and having nothing to cast at the foot of Christ.
In viewing Dana on The Five, I would think that her words of encouragement would be beneficial to those who read her book. And just as one would want to model their career or image after someone they admire and have done well in their career, those who walk by faith must desire to model their lives after the One who successfully conquered the trials of this life; Christ the Lord. He is our life coach, our mentor, our disciple. However, God has given us a book that teaches us everything that pertains to life and godliness. His wisdom, character, experience knowledge, and power, will empower us to live a life that is pleasing to God. Christ was always about His Father’s business, we should be as well and not following after the human wisdom of this world as we are instructed in Colossians 1:8, “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.” Be blessed!
