Journaling through the Proverbs – December

Published by

Welcome to the first day of the last month of the year. It has been a wonderful year as I have journaled through the Proverbs. I actually began reading a Proverb Each Day many years ago. We were at Calvary Chapel South in Kent, WA, where the pastor challenged us to read the Proverbs, instructing us that there was a Proverb for each day of the month. I have started and stopped many times along the way because I would get distracted and, at times, discouraged. But God kept nudging me on to journal through the Proverbs and share the priceless nuggets of wisdom in each chapter.

Proverbs is our life manual. It teaches us about marriage, raising children, developing godly character, making wise choices, building healthy relationships, and so much more. The Proverbs also warns us about the consequences of ungodliness, pride, arrogance, wickedness, and other forms of foolishness and misconduct. I hope that you have been encouraged through this year as you have journaled through the Proverbs with me. Now that I have gone through all the Proverbs, I have consolidated all of the nuggets of wisdom into a devotional for easy reference and encouragement. Thank you for taking the time to journal through the Proverbs and receive this amazing gift God has given us to live a life of peace, contentment, and godliness. Be blessed.

December 21 – Proverbs 21:5-7, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage, but everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty. The acquisition of treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor, the pursuit of death. The violence of the wicked will drag them away, because they refuse to act with justice.”

How many times have we rushed through something only to have to do it all over again? Doing things in haste means that we don’t allow time for proper planning. We don’t plan properly because we procrastinate. We place ourselves in a vicious loop of acting hastily when we don’t have a wise plan for managing our finances. When placed in a desperate situation, we make poor choices. We want God to quickly deliver us from the bad choices we make, and when He doesn’t, we stress out and try to take matters into our own hands. Once I understood what it meant to trust God, I had to allow the consequences of poor financial planning to take their course; however, it was not as bad as when I tried to mend things on my own. But God sees all things, and in due time He will judge all who act wickedly. Be blessed!

December – Proverbs 20:7-9, “A righteous man who walks in his integrity— how blessed are his sons after him. A king who sits on the throne of justice disperses all evil with his eyes. Who can say, “I have cleansed my heart, I am pure from my sin”?”

As we continue to gain wisdom and understanding from the Proverbs that teach us about life and conduct, we are met with questions to help us examine our spiritual lives. Sometimes, or many times, just because we can sense the fellowship of the Spirit and God’s favor in our lives, we can forget that we are still human. We can deceive ourselves into thinking that we have become sinless and think more highly of ourselves than we should. I like how God keeps me in check. It seems that I can find myself in the most embarrassing places, but it’s God’s goodness and grace because it keeps me humble, knowing that I can not cleanse my own heart, and although I strive to live a life of purity, the enemy comes quickly to steal, kill, and destroy. Only the blood of Jesus can cleanse our hearts and purify us and present us as righteous before God. Be Blessed!

December 19 – Proverbs 19:16-18, “He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, but he who is careless of conduct will die. One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his good deed. Discipline your son while there is hope, and do not desire his death.”

Living a set-apart life for God and our Lord is not easy. We must come to the place where we love God so much that we truly desire to be just like Him. Our desire is not to appease man but to humble ourselves under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. God has taught us to desire good, righteousness, and life by practicing His Word. I have learned that there is no one as generous as God, and His character of generosity should be reflected in how we live our lives. Scripture teaches us to be always willing to give, and when we give, give with excellence. God has paid us all one hundredfold every time He wakes us up. He shows His love by challenging us, testing our faith, and disciplining us so that we would live. That is the same desire we should have for our children. I understand why God commands us as He does in verse 18. He knows the destructive path of the ungodly, and He wants us to protect our children from that path just as He protects us through His Word. Be blessed!

December 18 – Proverbs 18:1-3 – “He who separates himself seeks his own desire, he quarrels against all sound wisdom. A fool does not delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own mind. When a wicked man comes, contempt also comes, and with dishonor comes scorn.”

The enemy loves it when we isolate ourselves or hide in shame when we have done something wrong. God tells us that we must confess our sins to Him and to other mature Christians who can minister correctly. We disarm the enemy’s ability to beat us down with the same guilt and discouragement when we confess our sins. Romans 8:1 teaches us that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ… God knows the weakness of our fleshly bodies. God’s Holy Spirit empowers us to resist the temptations the enemy will present to us. When someone insists on being distant and tries to work through their problems on their own, they are targets for the enemy’s deception. Only God’s Word can lead us to victory over the enemy’s snares. God’s Word is truth, and it is His truth that sets us free. Be Blessed

December  – Proverbs 17 – Proverbs 17: 7-9, “Excellent speech is not fitting for a fool, much less are lying lips to a prince. A bribe is a charm in the sight of its owner; wherever he turns, he prospers. He who conceals a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends.”

I hope that you will continue to allow the contrast of the righteous and the wicked to give you wisdom to build your life. God has given us a great gift in His Word, and He has been gracious to provide us with wisdom in knowing how to deal with this life. A fool only knows how to speak in a way that showcases himself. He is stuck on himself. He does not know how to use his words to comfort, encourage, give grace, or anything else that may make another person’s life easier. These Proverbs also teach us that certain qualities should be evident when choosing a leader. He or she should be a liar. We should seek to support leaders who are honest and have integrity. As followers of Christ, our first reaction to someone’s response to us should not be to take offense. We should try to think the best about a person so that the devil does not put more evil in our minds. When we take offense to things that may seem offensive, that is a choice, and we could, in the same way, choose to ignore it or cover it with grace. May you be blessed as you allow God’s Word to draw you closer to Him. Be Blessed!

December – Proverbs 16:7-10 – “When a man’s ways are pleasing to the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. Better is a little with righteousness than great income with injustice. The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. A divine decision is in the lips of the king; His mouth should not err in judgment.”

God desires to establish us in His righteousness. Proverbs 16 reminds us of how God desires us to seek to live righteously, to love righteousness, and to live our lives through acts of righteousness. As you are ministered to today, think about this question. How pressed are you to embrace righteousness and live righteously? God has provided a blessing through His Word, and He desires to see us accomplish that which He created us for. We can plan and make goals and have aspirations, but the Lord will order our steps to the place He desires us to be when we do those things that are pleasing in His sight. We make our way and want God to bless it. We must have that same mindset that is in Christ, “not my will, but Your will be done”. Be blessed!

December 15 – Proverbs 15:10-15, “Grievous punishment is for him who forsakes the way; He who hates reproof will die. Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord, how much more the hearts of men!  A scoffer does not love one who reproves him, he will not go to the wise. A joyful heart makes a cheerful face, but when the heart is sad, the spirit is broken. The mind of the intelligent seeks knowledge, but the mouth of fools feeds on folly. All the days of the afflicted are bad, but a cheerful heart has a continual feast.”

Today, we are encouraged to examine our hearts, minds, words, and actions through reflections in Proverbs 15.  When we disobey God’s Word, it will bring bad consequences and punishment in our lives.  For those of us who are born-again, God will discipline us because He loves us and sees where our ungodly conduct will lead us.  There is nothing hidden from God. He knows the motives behind how we act, think, and speak, and the motives of our hearts.  He only wants us to confess our sins so that He can restore us to fellowship with Him and submission to the Holy Spirit.  When God reproves us, it causes us to be thankful that He loves us enough to correct us, but those who are not Christians scoff and despise God’s discipline.  The mind of those who are intelligent, especially spiritually intelligent, seeks after God in doing what is pleasing to Him.  The foolish only feed on the evil in their heart to rebel and oppose anything that God commands.  For those set on being defiant and it brings adverse consequences, their afflictions are always bad, but for those who are followers of Christ, even in affliction, the joy of the Lord provides a continual feast of thankfulness and gratitude, reflected in a joyful heart. Be blessed!

December 14 – Proverbs 14:7-9, “Leave the presence of a fool, or you will not discern words of knowledge. The wisdom of the sensible is to understand his way, but the foolishness of fools is deceit. Fools mock at sin, but among the upright there is good will.”

Be encouraged as you continue along in learning the wisdom of the Proverbs in the contrast between the wicked and the righteous. These are amazing insights, and God will stir up these Scriptures as He pleases in each of our hearts. In all of these principles of wisdom, the key is application. We must be careful in who we allow to surround our lives.  Before we came to Christ, we had no criteria for the kind of character we accept in those we socialize with, but when we became new creations in Christ, we discovered that not everyone would fit into the new path of life we have chosen in Christ.  If we allow the ungodly to counsel us, we will not discern words of knowledge; instead, we will choose the opinions of men.  The wisdom of those who follow Christ is to understand the life He has called us to live, but those who are non-believers are not concerned about living to please God.  They mock at sin and think that those of us who choose to turn away from a lifestyle of immorality are missing out. Those who mock at sin and indulge in it as a lifestyle are the ones who are under the bondage and captivity of the enemy and have no power to make any other choice.  The Holy Spirit within us empowers us to resist the devil, choose righteousness, and follow the will of God.   The life of the upright does not miss out on pleasure; we have the greatest joy and the pleasure of being in fellowship with God.  Be blessed.

December 13 – Proverbs 13:4-6, “The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the soul of the diligent is made fat. A righteous man hates falsehood, but a wicked man acts disgustingly and shamefully. Righteousness guards the one whose way is blameless, but wickedness subverts the sinner.”

As you read through Proverbs 13, consider how you have allowed the wisdom of God to produce His righteous conversion within your life. God has gifted us with the word to be a mirror, and our life on this earth is our dressing room to prepare us for eternity. Each day, we reflect the spiritual fruit in our lives and if we look more and more like God through the work that Christ does in us by the Holy Spirit. Remember to speak these Proverbs into your heart. When we are studying and reading the word, it may get into our heads, but the word needs to reach our hearts and become a transforming agent in our lives. If we are not training or discipling ourselves, we will not grow spiritually. Philippians 2:12 teaches us, “So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling;”

So often we wait to be discipled, but the greatest disciple we will ever encounter is Christ. He is the Word of God. John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” What does God’s Word tell you about who you are becoming in Christ through the Proverb? Be blessed!

December 12 – Proverbs 12:1-3 – “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid. A good man will obtain favor from the Lord, but He will condemn a man who devises evil. A man will not be established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous will not be moved.”

As we go through this second round of Proverbs and are reminded of the Scriptures we covered in the first half of the year, I pray that God bring fresh wisdom. No matter how many times we hear God’s Word, He will work out good for us. Today’s Proverbs encourage us to embrace God’s love and wisdom. I think about how I watch reruns of my favorite mystery shows and Hallmark romantic comedies, and even though I know exactly what’s going to happen in the end, I sit through each scene again and again just as if it were my first time watching them. How much more does the timeless word of God give us power and wisdom each time we hear it? It’s always powerful, always life-changing, always good for us. As God brings forth the word as you read and study today, cherish the thought that the God of the universe desires to share His brilliance with us. As we abide in His wisdom, we will not be moved by the things around us. Be Blessed!

December 11 – Proverbs 11:12-14, “He who despises his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding keeps silent. He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy conceals a matter. Where there is no guidance, the people fall, but in abundance of counselors, there is victory.”

The Scriptures teach us that our neighbors dwell next to us for safety. As followers of Christ, we are to care for our neighbors, pray for them, and make living in our midst a blessing instead of an annoyance. We are to comfort, pray, and support them when they fall on hard times. We should not be gossiping and spreading everything we hear through the neighborhood gossip vine. When we conduct ourselves in Christ-like character, we provide a bridge of access to those who may be seeking to find their place and purpose in God’s kingdom. When our neighbors come to us, they must be able to have confidence that we are trustworthy, and what poor representations we would be if we are not trustworthy. God’s Word in the Proverbs is our counselor, and the abundant wisdom we find in them will surely bring us victory when the enemy tries to attack us. Be blessed

December 10 – Proverbs 10:8 “The wise of heart will receive commands, but a babbling fool will be ruined.”

The wisest thing we can do is yield to the commandments of God. Every one of God’s commands is good for our souls, our health, and our lives. His commands are founded on His perfect knowledge of everything. There is nothing better for us than to live in obedience to God. What are our options? Disobedience. No matter how we may try to wrap our actions up so they will not appear so bad to us, it all boils down to disobedience. This is our 3rd round of reading a Proverb a Day. Each month, we start over, reading Scripture after Scripture about keeping God’s commands. I hope that as we go through this year, reading the Proverbs each month, these Proverbs that build wisdom will become your way of thinking, acting, reacting, and living. I pray that you will always become obedient followers of Christ, living by His commands and bringing glory to His name. Be blessed!

December 9 – Proverbs 9:9-11, “Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser, teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For by me your days will be multiplied, and years of life will be added to you.”

We can never be too wise. We can never know enough about God. True wisdom comes from having the right respect and reverence for God and His power. As the Body of Christ, God desires for us to learn together, grow together, pray together, worship, and serve together. But these times help us to understand just how important our relationship with God and Christ is through the Holy Spirit. One of the things I have learned through these times is that no matter if I am walking my faith alone or have a family of believers around me, my faith must be in Christ alone. By the Holy Spirit, the Word of God instructs and teaches me at all times.

The knowledge of the Holy One is essential to understanding wisdom, because in knowing God, we understand that all of creation is subject to His sovereignty. Communion with God should be our way of life. I pray that you will have an amazing Holy Spirit-filled week because you have allowed God to fill your heart every day through His Holy Spirit. He is like our personal pastor. He convicts us, talks to us, convicts us, comforts us, corrects us, and leads us to serve in ways we would never consider. I pray that you will embrace God’s gift of our helper, the Holy Spirit, every day. Be blessed.

December 8 – Proverbs 8:12-13, “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion. “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverted mouth, I hate.” That verse caught my attention and reminded me of what James teaches us about the mouth. James 3:8-12, “But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.”

When I hear my sisters and brothers openly using profanity like it’s nothing, it breaks my heart. How God’s heart must break at such blatant disregard and disrespect for His holiness. As Christ’s followers, He has made all things new for us, including how we speak, and holiness should not stop at our lips but fill every part of us. God does not hear the prayers of the perverted tongue. Over and over in the Proverbs, we are taught about the perverted and profane tongue. God deserves our holiness. Think about your attitude toward using your mouth for profane and perverted language. What does that say about your obedience to God? Do you think that God cares? As you think about this, allow God to minister His truth to you. Be blessed!

December 7 – Proverbs 7:9-13 –“In the twilight, in the evening, in the middle of the night, and in the darkness. And behold, a woman comes to meet him, dressed as a harlot and cunning of heart. She is boisterous and rebellious, her feet do not remain at home; She is now in the streets, now in the squares, and lurks by every corner. So she seizes him and kisses him and with a brazen face she says to him: “I was due to offer peace offerings; Today I have paid my vows.”

These verses in Proverbs 7 depict a woman intent on fulfilling her own lustful desires. She does not care if this man has a family, if he was a criminal, or about the sexual health of this man. She does not care about her own family or how this will destroy her marriage or the well-being of her own children, if she has any.  She grabs hold of him and begins to have her own way. She does not seek to hear what his response may be if she were to inquire.  She is driven by lust, and she wants that lustful desire to be satisfied.  This is a sad picture, but a very real picture of life in today’s world.  The Scriptures warn us that in the end times, people will be lovers of themselves instead of lovers of God. Anyone who loves God would never behave this way, because God tells us to flee ALL sexual immorality.

Clearly, this woman shows a lack of contentment and a bold attempt to have someone who does not belong to her.  As you ponder these Scriptures, consider your own situation.  These Scriptures give a warning to men to be discerning in selecting the kind of women they will enter a relationship with and instruction to women, teaching them about the kind of person they don’t want to be.  Be blessed!

December 6 – Proverbs 6:6-8, “Go to the ant, O sluggard, observe her ways and be wise, which, having no chief, officer or ruler, prepares her food in the summer and gathers her provision in the harvest.”

As you journal and reflect on the Proverbs for today, take note of how intricately God is involved with His creation. Even the tiniest animal has a place and purpose in His plan. He shows the unique ways that we can learn from everything He has created. In Psalm 119:91, it says, “They stand this day according to Your ordinances, for all things are Your servants.” In this verse, the context of the subject is speaking of how God holds the earth in its place. But it is true for all of life that all things are God’s servants. Even the tiny ant serves God in how life operates in the animal kingdom, and can be an example to us foolish and prideful humans. There is nothing on this earth that God can use to bring Him glory. This in itself should bring us awe and admiration for the amazing brilliance of our Father and Creator. Be blessed!

December 5 – Proverbs 5:1-3 – “My son, give attention to my wisdom, incline your ear to my understanding; That you may observe discretion and your lips may reserve knowledge. For the lips of an adulteress drip honey and smoother than oil is her speech;”

These verses in Proverbs 5 provide wisdom on a specific issue of life and teach us how to deal with a certain type of woman. This can serve as a warning in discerning the kind of woman to avoid and wisdom on how to build godly character that does not lead to one becoming an adulteress. In this day and age, the practice of developing godly character in a child’s heart no longer appears to be important.  Today, most parents are more invested in their child becoming the next sports star, graduating from the best college, or becoming the next celebrity.  God has given these insights, particularly in how we raise our sons. The person our child or children chooses to associate with can have either a positive or negative impact on their lives. These Scriptures provide parents with wisdom in guiding their sons to avoid the wrong type of woman.  We have many insights to make wise choices from the wisdom that God gives us through the Proverbs. God has created us for a glorious purpose, and I pray that every one of you will walk in His glorious purpose for your life. Be blessed!

December 4 – Proverbs 4:13-15, “When you walk, your steps will not be impeded; And if you run, you will not stumble. Take hold of instruction; do not let go. Guard her, for she is your life. Do not enter the path of the wicked and do not proceed in the way of evil men. Avoid it, do not pass by it; Turn away from it and pass on.”

God has made every attempt through His Word to compel us to obey His instructions. He is the Creator of all things and knows all things; it would behoove us to pay attention, obey, and trust Him. Whenever I read Proverbs 4, I envision God as a parent, knowing that He knows what is up ahead and He is trying to keep His child from the dangers they can not see. These Scriptures instruct us about the necessity to live righteously. How many different ways does He have to say, listen, trust, and obey? But He is so gracious and patient , and if not for His amazing grace, I don’t know what would have come of my life. I hope that as you reflect on these Proverbs, you will hear God’s parental heart and allow these Scriptures to help you build a godly foundation for you, your relationships, and all that God calls you to do. Be blessed!

December 3 – Proverbs 3:3-7- “Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.  So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.  Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and turn away from evil.”

When we put our trust in the LORD, we let go of our lives and give all control to God. It’s like riding in a horse-drawn carriage, and the road becomes too difficult for me to navigate the path to my destination. I have to hand over the reins to someone else because I don’t have the ability to do so. Once I do that, I no longer have control of the horses or the path. When I trust the LORD with all my heart, I agree that He knows everything. I agree with Him that He has created and fashioned all the days of my life and has already resolved everything that will come about, and I can live in peace because I know Him and His power. We are limited in our human abilities. We don’t know what will happen in the next second of our lives, but God does. We do not have the wisdom He has, but He is willing to share His wisdom with us. His wisdom will give us truth and a clear understanding of how we should act or react to our circumstances. We don’t try to help Him manage our lives; we trust His sovereignty and grace. Be blessed!

December 2 – Proverbs 2:6-9 – “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice, and He preserves the way of His godly ones. Then you will discern righteousness and justice and equity and every good course.”

These verses in Proverbs 2 teach us that the fool has no control over their mouth. They say whatever comes out of their mouth. As Christ’s followers, the attributes of the Holy Spirit should define us.  As we allow God to fill our lives, He will teach us how to speak His language. If we talk, we should speak words from a spirit of discernment. Being able to observe and know what to say, when to say it, and whose life God is leading us to speak into. God has not called us to counsel everyone. He fills us with wisdom when we wait to be led by Him. He wants our words to build up and bring life, to lead people to hope and truth. Discretion requires forethought. I encourage you to seek God as you go through your week and speak with your husbands, children, neighbors, coworkers, and friends. He would give you discernment and say that you would use discretion. Be blessed.

December 1 – Proverbs 1:1-7. In the final month of journaling through the Proverbs, I have chosen one excerpt from each chapter from the past eleven months. Today, we will reflect on the purpose and benefit of the Proverbs. I once had a Proverbs group on Facebook each day, and a dear friend, Mary Diggins, would assist me in sharing insights with the group. She shared insights from Proverbs 1:1-7. These verses of Proverbs teach us why God gave Solomon the gift of wisdom and its benefits in navigating the journey of life. This is what these priceless words of wisdom teach us:

“To know wisdom and instruction, to discern the sayings of understanding, to receive instruction in wise behavior, righteousness, justice, and equity; To give prudence to the naive, to the youth knowledge and discretion.” A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel, to understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

As a follower of Christ, one of the most amazing things I have experienced about God is that He never calls us to do something without giving us instructions on how to do it. He also empowers us by His Holy Spirit to accomplish what He calls us to do. Yet, so many would neglect this book of wisdom, then wonder why their lives are so difficult. The Proverbs is our parenting manual, marriage manual, relationship manual, financial management manual, character development manual, and so much more. We will see the truth of God’s word come to life when we follow the wisdom or warnings given to us through King Solomon’s Proverbs. Further in this chapter, God says that He will laugh when some come into calamity because they did not choose to heed His Word. I get that. He is giving us all the knowledge and understanding we need to live according to His plan. Then, if we reject it or neglect it, how can we then call on Him and want Him to fix our unwise actions and the messes we get ourselves into? But God is gracious and faithful; He forgives us and renews us over and over again. Understanding the purpose of the Proverbs can benefit us in many ways and protect us from the schemes and tricks of the devil. Be Blessed!
