You’ve decided to receive Christ’s grace in lieu of repentance from sin and submit to Him as Lord, so what’s next? Once we repent and receive God’s grace, God imparts the Holy Spirit within our spirit, and we experience the rebirth of salvation. Christ sanctifies us and washes our sins away, past, present, and future. Now we must participate in this amazing transforming work Christ has afforded us. The transformation comes through obeying and applying the Word of God. Paul teaches us in Philippians 2:12 that we are responsible for growing to spiritual maturity. “So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling;”

The process of working out our own salvation in Christ is called discipleship. Christ’s disciples were those who chose to follow Him and follow the example He set by obeying God. We, too, are to be His disciples. When I decided to follow Christ, the church I attended assigned me a person who would guide me in living the Christian life I had committed to. Christ sanctifies us to God, but when we apply His word to our lives, it changes our outlook on life, the way we conduct ourselves, the way we think, the way we treat others, and the way we relate to God. This is what is called sanctification. We set ourselves apart from unbelievers in how we obey and apply God’s Word. The New Testament is where believers find their instructions on how to live the life Christ died for us to have.
